Yes, even the commandant's wife, Ilse Koch, had shrunken heads, along with book covers, gloves, and other assorted clothing and material made of inmate skin. Alexander Leevery well researched and for that reason i am giving it a 4 star rating....however, this is not a book to read for any sort of entertainment value, really...i realize it is non fiction, but with historical pieces, i usually find such enjoyable to read...this was far too dry for my tastes in that regard...if you have a burning interest in the Renaissance tho, i would highly recommend this book...i may revisit in future for another try...i was impressed with the scholarship in it...it just read, to me, like a dissertation, and i found it difficult to focus on...thank you to Doubleday and M. This unrealistic view of men cripples "Walk to the End of the World" by making the male characters one-dimensional and uninterestin. Why did I enjoy it so much? Well there's hardly enough words to tell you without giving away the whole story - but what I will tell you is this...Brooklyn is a normal teenage girl with your pretty average lif. The family's struggle to make ends meet; her employment as a hotel switchboard operator; the death of her beloved older brother in World War II; her brief career as a flight attendant for Pan Am; her marriage to Warren Clark; sitting at the kitchen table, writing stories, and finally selling the first one for one hundred dollars (after six years and some forty rejections!) - all these experiences figure into Kitchen Privileges. She might have done it but then her former lover had a dramatic side and had attempted suicide before- maybe this time he succeeded? After the trial she moves to London and then New York where she die. Just an average guy who finds love at a high school reunion, except for the ball of light he sucked into his lungs and births from his ches. Reading the book is a transporting experience but with a good deal of shocks and jolts that bring the narrative suddenly near at han.
